SUMMARY:Peter Albrechtsen: Creating a Character's Sonic World
DESCRIPTION:  Sound connects directly with our emotions\, making it one of cinema’s most powerful storytelling tools. When you feel you’re hearing what a character hears\, you form an immediate psychological connection\, a visceral bond — one that bypasses logic and language to reach us on a deeper level. As sound designers and mixers\, we often focus on the sounds that surround characters or those they produce. But I find that thinking more about what the characters hear and how they perceive the world sonically is often even more important – a character’s internal\, sonic universe. Considering this already at the script stage can spark rich conversations about a character’s inner world\, inspiring directors\, writers\, and even actors. In my recent work on both fiction and documentary films\, this approach has shaped collaborations from the earliest stages through to the final mix. I’ll explore my process and share examples of how listening through a character’s ears can transform the filmmaking process. Seminar led by Peter AlbrechtsenSaturday\, 14 March 2026\, 11:00AM-1:00PM (GMT UK)OnlineFollowing his online talk of 26 February\, Peter will lead a small-group seminar where participants can engage with his ideas and artistic practice in a more personal setting.
