Register now for the School of Sound International Symposium
24 – 27 April 2019
The Purcell Room, Southbank Centre
We are delighted to announce that the 2019 School of Sound is sponsored by Falmouth University.
What is the School of Sound?
Since its beginning in 1998, the School of Sound has raised the profile of sound production in the arts and media. To all those working with sound, this unique forum has offered an exceptional series of presentations on the use of sound in film, theater, dance, television, radio, games and installation. Sonic environments, sound design, sound as metaphor, human sound perception – the topics have ranged from the practical to the aesthetic to the metaphysical during these intense four-day meetings.
The focus of the School of Sound is on listening – listening to reflections, experiences and work of some of the world’s leading practitioners, artists and educators. Each year, people from all aspects of the arts, media and audio-visual industries have gathered from over 40 countries to hear the speakers define and interpret their personal use of sound from both traditional approaches and radical new perspectives. Anyone working with sound will find the juxtaposition of ideas captivating and inspiring.
The School of Sound is designed not just for sound designers and composers but also for the directors, writers and producers who must share in the creative thinking to use sound effectively and imaginatively. You won’t learn how to use hardware or software at the School of Sound. But it will move you to say, “I never thought of working that way.”

If you want to build a ship, don’t drum up people to collect wood and don’t assign them tasks and work,
but rather teach them to long for the endless immensity of the sea.

School of Film & Television, Falmouth
Filmmaking has been taught at Falmouth for over fifty years; fusing the creativity of making with the challenges of critical thinking, all harnessed in the service of story. We are a ‘story school’ committed to teaching students how to tell engaging, dynamic and relevant stories (over multiple platforms) for the 21st Century. We fund, make and distribute micro-budget feature films led by our graduates and staff, crewed by our students. Our world class production facilities, equipment and technical specialists, mirror real-world industry workflow, so whether working on location or in a studio, audio is absolutely central to our teaching of animation, fiction, documentary and experimental filmmaking.
