Having worked for over thirty years as a production sound recordist (sound mixer), Stuart Wilson has been nominated for seven Academy Awards and seven BAFTAs winning an Oscar and a Bafta for Best Sound for 1917. In this session, Stuart explores the creative and technical skills that make sound recording fundamental to understanding characters and stories. He will explain how he prepares for a shoot through close examination of the script and readying the set to produce the type of sound required by both the story and the director.

2 hours including Q&A.
Each ticket includes free access to a recording of the event for 6 months.

Originally from Glasgow, Stuart Wilson moved to London to attend The National Film & Television School. Wilson has worked with many of the great directors of our time including Steven Spielberg, David Cronenberg, Bernardo Bertolucci, JJ Abrams, Wes Anderson, Bong Joon Ho, Michael Winterbottom, Fernando Meirelles and Sam Mendes.

His work has ranged from major studio films such as Star WarsJames Bond and Harry Potter to smaller art-house films like Justin Kurzel’s Macbeth, Sofia Coppola’s Marie-Antoinette24 Hour Party People and In This World. In This World, a road-movie, made with a crew of seven, filming in an Afghan refugee camp in Pakistan shortly after 9/11, brought a BIFA nomination for Best Technical Achievement.

“The technical side of film-making is a means to an end though. Like any tools or a musical instrument, you just need to be able to use it well enough that it doesn’t get in the way of helping to tell the story.”
