Read, Look, Listen

A few years ago, there was a retrospective of the Quay Brothers films. For those unfamiliar with their work, these are extraordinary films that combine puppetry, stop-frame animation, live action, haunting decors, unnerving soundtracks and mesmerising cinematography. Having just experienced all that, a member of the audience asked the filmmakers how he could learn to make films like theirs. One of the brothers answered, “We spend a lot of time in libraries.” And that is what we’d like you to do.

At the heart of the School of Sound is our library of articles and recordings, offering you the opportunity to learn how sound operates in the arts, the media and beyond. This material embodies the ideas and experiences of the myriad practitioners and teachers who have made valuable contributions to what is an ongoing conversation.

We will upload more material from our archive over the coming months.
