The School of Sound is a space to learn about the creative use of sound in the arts and media. Through online events, short courses, research, reflection and our collection of writings, interviews and recorded talks, we offer you the opportunity to re-think how sound operates in the arts and media. Sound design, human sound perception, non-naturalistic sound, sound as metaphor – the topics range from the practical to the aesthetic to the metaphysical, creating a new awareness of sound for all those working in screen, gallery and audio production.

You wish to see, listen;
hearing is a step toward vision.

Listening to Shadows
Seรกn Street explores the work of Piers Plowright

From 1998 to 2017, the BBC radio features producer Piers Plowright traditionally gave the opening talk at the biennial School of Sound international festivals celebrating the world of audio in its many forms. Seรกn Street shares extracts from these talks, as well as from Plowrightโ€™s radio oeuvre, and some personal recollections of their friendship. Found sound, music, the human voice, and - underlying everything - the silence of creative possibility: these were just some of the working tools of Piers Plowright. This will be an opportunity to revisit them, through the ears and voice of Plowright himself.
