Using the language of sound to tell stories is fundamental to the viewer’s immersive experience and emotional connection to every film. Nina will investigate the methods and choices made to enhance storytelling in film, using real world examples of innovative approaches to create authentic and captivating soundtracks. She will deconstruct some of her most well-known work, explaining the collaboration required between story, picture, music and sound – both on a technical and interpersonal level.

NINA HARTSTONE is an Academy Awardâ„¢, Bafta and Emmy winning Supervising Sound Editor who has worked in film for over 30 years.
Having started out in the cutting rooms at Pinewood Studios as a trainee, she worked her way up through the sound editorial ranks and is passionate about nurturing the next generation of sound creatives, with a particular focus on encouraging diversity through equal representation.
The importance of sound to the moviegoer’s immersive experience has driven her to create innovative ways of recording, designing and editing sound for film. Her credits include the Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody and the highly acclaimed David Bowie documentary, Moonage Daydream. This is in addition to films such as Gravity, Enola Holmes and the film that got everybody talking, Saltburn.
With a wealth of experience in sound for film, Nina has created unique experiences for every genre. Her recent projects include the groundbreaking documentary Deaf President Now! and Emerald Fennell’s much anticipated Wuthering Heights.
