Within the world of film education—through classes, masterclasses, lectures, seminars and online presentations—few voices are as captivating and enlightening as that of Walter Murch. Whether speaking about sound, editing, or any of the myriad creative skills that shape the language of filmmaking, he weaves together practice, theory and history into a beguiling tapestry that makes you understand filmmaking with new eyes and ears.
Walter’s career as an editor, sound designer, and director has left its mark on some of the most enduring films ever made, including Apocalypse Now, The Godfather, The English Patient and The Conversation. His many credits and awards speak for themselves, but more than that, it is his imagination and artistry—particularly in the realm of sound—that continue to influence how films are made—and how we experience them. If you work with film sound, you’re almost certainly applying techniques and insights he introduced—whether you realise it or not.
In this his fifth presentation for the School of Sound, Walter will reflect on how sound designers use the revelations of sound and sight that come to us after we are born, having previously lived 4.5 months in a ‘sound only’ environment. He’ll trace how the techniques used to guide an audience’s attention – the way we listen, see, and make meaning – carries echoes of that original sensory world in the womb.
